There comes a point in our lives where we have to adapt to certain changes. This could be related to your work, or this could be your growing family. In this case we may need additional space for the house.

What would we do?

Others move to a larger apartment because their current home no longer matches their condition. Some would simply enhance their existing space by adding an extension.

This is what Australian architecture firm Carter Williamson did with the Screen House. The owners wanted more space in their house and expanded their house.

But it’s not just an ordinary project.

Instead of matching the design of the existing house, the extension actually has an impressive look of its own. The designers used strong black colors in combination with wood in the interior.

The result?

A beautiful modern space that is both appealing and functional! Let’s take a look at the Screen House below.

Location: Sydney, Australia

Designer: Carter Williamson

This new extension of a country house in Sydney, Australia is indeed impressive. Note how the old cottage looks as pictured and how stunning the modern addition is! I can only imagine how it would feel to walk into this space as if you were already in a different home.

On this picture you can see the old house where the extension is connected. Here you can also see a small courtyard full of plants.

The wooden pendant lights match the rest of the house because of their material. It is also one of the functional decorations that add more beauty to the interior.

Screen House dining area

The dining area has a ladder added to the cabinets for easy access to the upper cabinets. It also adds itself as a decorative element. Also featured here is a collection of simple and elegant wooden pendant lights that help anchor the dining table.

Screen House kitchen cabinet

This is part of the new extension to the home with black cabinets running the full length of the wall from the kitchen to the dining area. Also featured here is a wooden kitchen island that connects to the wooden dining table and wooden window and door frames.

Screen House stairs

Here you can see the staircase, which is located next to the kitchen. It leads to the upper floor of the house where the bedrooms and bathrooms are located. I am sure you will agree that this staircase is a beautiful focal point of the house.

Screen House dining room

Both the dining and living areas open onto the backyard. This is made possible through the use of large full-height sliding glass doors that allow natural light into the space even when closed. There is also another dining area in the backyard that sits on an elevated spot.

Screen House bathroom

Like the rest of the house, the bathroom is black. This is across the courtyard by the kitchen and by the stairs. This stunning modern bathroom features small black penny tiles covering the surfaces and frosted windows that bring natural light into the space. If you are not a fan of this look, check out black and white bathrooms you might prefer.

Screen House backyard

This is the outdoor dining area that we mentioned earlier. As you can see, it’s on raised concrete, accessed by the stairs. Also note that the surrounding countryside is beautifully landscaped and it would be very relaxing to do some activities like reading or even eating out here.

Screen House colorful bathroom

Colorful tiles were used instead of black in one of the bathrooms in the house, which is upstairs. Aside from the bright colors, the tiles also have stripes that add a creative appeal to the room from the walls to the ceiling. This is indeed a surprising twist on the look of the home’s other interiors.

The Screen House Balmain is indeed a beautiful project by Carter Williamson. The result of the designer’s creativity is undoubtedly impressive and gave the owners a new space to pursue their daily activities at home. But what I love most here is the use of black and wooden materials! While others would not be open to using black colors, the designers of this home preferred to use the color to create a unique interior. I also love their selection of decors and accessories. Having said that, it was a good idea to open the space to the outside so residents could enjoy the charms of nature. Can you tell me what features you like most about this house?
